Thermette's  History:

"The Thermette was first invented in 1929 by New Zealander John Ashley Hart but became a cultural icon and found its true home and place in New Zealand's history during the Second World War. For New Zealand soldiers fighting the deserts of North Africa the Thermette became a standard and treasured piece of equipment and earned the nickname the `Benghasi Boiler'.

It was originally advertised with the slogan `the more the wind the quicker it boils', indicating its usefulness in bad weather when other stoves might not work. "

Boiling is the safest method of purifying drinking water.

THERMETTE delivers boiling water quickly.  The proven design uses a unique cone shaped internal wall so heat is distributed to a large surface area surrounded by water.  Simultaneously, heat is funneled to the top where a frying pan or pot can be used for cooking.

However it was not until World War II that the Thermette's useful and clever design really earned its keep:

"When war broke out in 1939, the New Zealand Army came to Mr Hart and asked him to waive the patent so they could make their own Thermettes. He agreed and the `fastest water boiler around' was issued as standard equipment to every small army unit. The sites where the New Zealanders set up camp were always marked by circles of scorched earth where the Benghasi Boiler had been used for a brew up. Enemy troops overtaking positions previously held by the allies were reported to be puzzled by the marks until they learnt to identify them with the New Zealanders and their unique water boiler."

Unlike the "Original" Benghazi  Boiler, today's Thermette has been modified to be far more versatile:
Simply set the included cooking ring on the top of the boiler and and you can prepare a meal while waiting for the water to boil.

The egg at right is ready to turn three minutes after the wood was ignited.

Remove the Thermette, add the cooking stove top (included) - the combined cooking ring and  fire base then becomes a very efficient small wood stove.

With over sixty years of proven performance, the Thermette is an ideal companion for Camping, Hiking, Canoeing, White Water Rafting, Kayak Eco-Touring, Fishing, Hunting, and about any other activity in the outdoors.  It is also a great addition to any Earthquake or  disaster survival kit.
